Luxembourg Regtech AlphaOmega recently exited after being acquired by UK-based fund data specialist FE fundinfo. Founded in 2017 and currently employing around 70 people, CEO Antoine Capone shares the AlphaOmega method.
What made now the right time to join forces with FE fundinfo, and what factors convinced you this was the right partner for AlphaOmega?
Antoine Capone: AlphaOmega provides fund registration, regulatory reporting and data dissemination services; as the European regulatory landscape is evolving rapidly and we have reached an advanced stage of growth, the timing to join forces with FE fundinfo was optimal. I founded AlphaOmega in my garage and, together with the team, built it to a level of recognition and maturity that makes us a unique and respected player in Luxembourg’s asset management ecosystem.
Joining forces with FE fundinfo allows us to “level up” to a European scale and become part of a global service offering that positions us to be the future leader in asset servicing across Europe. FE fundinfo’s international reach, complementary technology and shared commitment to high-quality ESG and fund data made them the ideal partner to accelerate this next chapter.
“The AlphaOmega that has merged with FE fundinfo is exactly the AlphaOmega we envisioned eight years ago.”
Antoine Capone, CEO of AlphaOmega
Can you talk us through the process of acquisition? What did you learn from the process and what was the price of the acquisition?
The acquisition process was, in truth, an incredible experience – one I will remember for the rest of my life. From the very beginning, the chemistry with FE fundinfo felt right; the human connections were excellent, we spoke the same language, and shared a common vision for the industry.
That said, it involved months of almost 24/7 work, which taught us a lot (not only about FE fundinfo but also about our own company) and allowed us to start building a strong foundation together. It was extremely enriching! As for the price, let’s just say it wasn’t enough to buy a small island, but it was enough to make this partnership truly impactful.
Looking back to 2017, when AlphaOmega was founded, what were the biggest challenges in building a regtech company in Luxembourg and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenges were definitely during the first few years: convincing others to join as partners, gaining clients’ trust, and finally finding the right colleagues. Those early years were tough, but we were united by a clear vision. The AlphaOmega that has merged with FE fundinfo is exactly the AlphaOmega we envisioned eight years ago. Since 2017, we have been steadily deploying our plan, with adaptations as needed to the inevitable twists and turns of running a company.
What we hadn’t anticipated, however, was the incredible human connections we have established along the way, and especially the continuity these provide on a global scale through the renowned FE fundinfo network.
“FE fundinfo will benefit from AlphaOmega’s dynamism, while we gain from FE fundinfo’s experience and industry expertise built over 20 years.”
Antoine Capone, CEO of AlphaOmega
What does this acquisition mean for your Luxembourg team and your existing European clients?
For our Luxembourg team and European clients, the acquisition ensures continuity of service while adding resources, technology and a wider international network. It also opens immense opportunities for our AlphaOmega team within a group of over 1,100 people with a strong international presence. The advantage for our clients is clear: they can now rely on AlphaOmega’s expertise within a more comprehensive and streamlined service offering through FE fundinfo. And FE fundinfo clients, in turn, will benefit from enhanced fund reporting capabilities.
With an average staff age of 27, we are very proud to have built a genuine start-up mindset. FE fundinfo will benefit from AlphaOmega’s dynamism, while we gain from FE fundinfo’s experience and industry expertise built over 20 years. Overall, this is a clear win-win for everyone, and the reception on social media has been not just positive but truly enthusiastic.
With major regulatory changes ahead – from SFDR to PRIIPs – where do you see the biggest opportunities for Luxembourg regtech companies in the next five years?
The upcoming regulatory changes open significant opportunities in sustainable finance reporting, data transparency and cross-border compliance. But regulatory compliance is a journey – it starts with good data, which underpins accurate filing and production, and ultimately enables effective distribution to clients and markets. At the same time, broader disruptions like blockchain and AI are transforming the way we work. These shifts were a key driver in our decision to join FE fundinfo.
The FE fundinfo group has a clear and strategic vision: not only delivering solutions for today’s industry, but also thinking about the solutions of tomorrow to make asset management in Europe more responsible and competitive. And I am extremely proud to be part of this journey now.
