Luxembourg’s startup ecosystem is no stranger to ambitious ideas, but few combine personal experience, scientific expertise, and entrepreneurial grit as powerfully as Astou Ndiaye, founder and CEO of Hale-X. Originally from Senegal and in Luxembourg for nearly 15 years, Astou is building a healthtech company with a mission as bold as it is human: “One twin per patient.”
From crisis to clarity
Hale-X was born from a deeply personal experience. During a life-threatening pregnancy complication, Astou faced what many patients know all too well: overwhelming medical data, inconsistent results, and even doctors struggling to connect the dots.
“Surviving that experience gave me the determination to create something that could help both doctors and patients make sense of the chaos, transforming data into insights that truly save lives,” she recalls.
With a background in biology and a Master’s in Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Astou set out to build Hale-X at the intersection of science and purpose.
One twin per patient
At its core, Hale-X is a multimodal platform that integrates diverse sources of health data (e.g., lab results, electronic health records, medical devices, and wearables) into a single, explainable AI-driven system. Unlike tools that focus on one dataset, Hale-X brings everything together to create a dynamic digital twin for every patient, offering personalised predictions and preventive insights.
This approach enables early detection of conditions such as diabetic complications or heart failure, where timing can make all the difference. “For doctors, it means faster, more informed decisions. For patients, it means clarity, empowerment, and prevention,” Astou explains.
Building momentum
The startup has been steadily gaining traction. Hale-X recently welcomed Jonathan Salmon as CTO, bringing over 30 years of experience in medical devices and regulatory affairs, alongside co-founder and Chief Research Officer Vania Ceccini, who deeply resonated with Astou’s vision. The team was also selected to pitch in the final round of Fit 4 Start, Luxembourg’s flagship acceleration programme, and has launched pilots with multiple partners.
Next on the roadmap is Hemalyse, an AI-powered blood test interpretation tool, set to launch first in Luxembourg and then across Europe.
Navigating barriers — and breaking them
As a young, Black, female founder in a heavily male-dominated industry, Astou’s journey has been anything but conventional.
“It sometimes feels like walking on inflamed stones. Walking into rooms where you are often the only woman, and the only Black woman, can feel daunting. You need a lot of core resilience to even want to enter this sector, which is so regulated, complex, and partnership-driven,” she says.
Her strength, she says, comes from passion and authenticity. “Credibility comes from results, and authenticity matters. The truth is that a Black female CEO in healthtech is extremely rare. According to research, less than 2% of VC funding globally goes to female founders, and only around 0.5% to Black women founders. I think I have some crazy in me, and that’s fine. If probabilities were taken into account, I would probably choose another road. However, I am not afraid. My skin colour does not define me.”
Balancing founder life and motherhood
Astou is also a mother, a role she describes as both grounding and motivating.
“Honestly, I’m not sure I found a perfect balance. Daring to create groundbreaking technology in healthtech is not easy. But I am fortunate to have a very supportive husband and family, which allows me to share a lot of quality time with my son. That is what keeps me grounded,” she says.
Astou believes that being a mother created in her a sense of urgency to contribute and innovate. “It constantly reminds me why I am building Hale-X — for a future where healthcare is more precise, accessible and human.”
The Luxembourg advantage
Luxembourg has played a pivotal role in Hale-X’s journey. “The first thing I would say is: genuinely kind people. When they see talent, they are ready to help. Kudos to my former professor, Eric Tschirhart, for believing in me when this was just an idea.”
She highlights the country’s small but highly connected ecosystem. “Luxembourg is a very unique ecosystem: extremely small and connected, where everyone knows everyone. I have received support from the University of Luxembourg, Luxinnovation, Hive, the House of BioHealth, and many individuals who helped simply because they believed in our vision. Institutions and hospitals have also been very welcoming when they saw the potential value. Things can move very fast here compared to other countries.”
Looking ahead
Now, Hale-X is officially announcing its seed round, inviting angel investors and VCs to the discussion. The coming year promises clinical pilots with hospitals, exciting product launches, and a strong focus on regulatory pathways.Astou’s ambition leaves no doubt: “By 2030, Hale-X should be synonymous with digital twins in healthcare — serving millions of patients and helping doctors everywhere deliver better, faster, more precise care.”
