How do people network in Silicon Valley?

People come to Silicon Valley to develop ideas, to meet great people and find investors. Networking is the Number One purpose to come to Silicon Valley.

But even if you’re shy, don’t worry. Just go to some meetups with cool titles like Startup Grind Silicon Valley, Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs & Startups, San Francisco Tech Ladies and you’ll be fine.

Sentences I heard most often. What are you involved in? I am developing a startup. How can I help you? What are you looking for? I am looking for a co-founder, CTO. Nice to meet you.

You give your business card. End of it.

What is amazing is that this sentence: How may I help you? really means something. At the end of Google for Entrepreneurs’ Startup Grind, the nice chairman from the team even asked if anyone in the room had help to offer to others. A lot of people stood up: from a journalist that offered to help navigate the media, to a designer who offered to work for free. There was also a man from New York who had recently arrived in the area and invited people to come to bi-weekly BBQs in his garden and to pitch their project.

I think that there is just something in the air of San Francisco and the Bay Area that results in people being relaxed, friendly and very open-minded.

There is a special duality between: “Give more than you get” & “Be proud and don’t be ashamed to show greed and ambition”. Something balancing between openness & fierce competition, but with honesty and people feeling comfortable with who they are.

And free food.
