Luxembourg’s LMO leads innovation in space technology with a groundbreaking partnership to revolutionise spacecraft docking.
LMO, a trailblazing space technology startup based in Luxembourg, is making significant strides in the global space industry with a new collaboration aimed at reducing the costs of spacecraft docking. This partnership with Katalyst Space Technologies, a US-based in-space service provider, will demonstrate a unique docking system that could dramatically alter the economics of space operations.
Renowned for its expertise in space situational awareness and in-orbit servicing, LMO has developed cutting-edge technologies for enhancing operational efficiency in space. By combining its proprietary VISION & SPECTRE edge-processing technologies with Katalyst’s novel “assisted rendezvous and proximity operations” (RPO) architecture, LMO is at the forefront of a new era in spacecraft docking. This innovative system is expected to simplify and reduce the costs associated with docking operations, which have traditionally relied on expensive and complex systems like LIDAR and robotic servicers.

In a significant move for the space industry, the demonstration mission, set to launch in the next 12 months, will showcase how combining technologies in a new configuration can enable efficient and cost-effective spacecraft docking. The mission will also demonstrate machine learning-based machine vision for pose estimation in geostationary orbit (GEO), marking a milestone for autonomous space operations.

US defence agency recognition
Earlier this year, Katalyst won a $2 million contract from US Space Command as part of the Sustained Space Maneuver (SSM) Challenge, an initiative designed to fund technology that improves the flexibility and sustainability of space assets in the face of evolving security threats. This collaboration with LMO allows the companies to quickly advance their technologies in a real-world setting.
The mission will also showcase LMO’s strength as a key player in Luxembourg’s expanding space economy. Luxembourg has long been a hub for space innovation, with the country fostering a strong ecosystem of startups, research initiatives, and partnerships aimed at shaping the future of space technology.
