Putting the ARRR! in start-up with Pirates on Shore Luxembourg

On the 18th of May I attended Pirates on Shore Luxembourg which was powered by Technoport. Pirates on Shore, originally from Germany, an event that connects local entrepreneurs with Venture Capitalists and Business Angels is currently touring Europe.  The winner of each local start-up pitch competition is invited to attend the Pirate Summit 2015 that will be hosted in Cologne on 2-3 September, an invitation only start-up conference connecting winning start-up pitchers with Venture Capitalists and Business Angels.

We gathered in Luxembourg Congrès at 6 pm on May 18th, the day before ICT Spring opened.

Present was Till Ohrmann from Pirate Summit who presented the Pirates organization and subsequently announced the winners of the first Pirates on Shore Luxembourg.

Olivier Zephir from Technoport acted as moderator for the pitches.

There were two sessions of start-ups pitching; the first session consisted of those start-ups who had previously registered to participate in the competition with a second session for those which were not participating but wished to practice their pitching. Whilst this second session was underway the jury retired to consider their verdict and the winner.

The first session for the officially registered start-ups in the pitching competition of Pirates on Shore Luxembourg included start-ups from Luxembourg, UK, Turkey, The Netherlands, South Korea, Italy, Japan and Australia. After each entities pitch the teams were asked questions by the Venture Capitalists and Business Angels present. Each pitch was three minutes long and supported by PowerPoint presentations or a short video.

The start-ups in the first session of pitching were: FinTech start-ups Capy, Bank Guard, Crypto Facilities, KTB Solution and Secure2key; gaming start-up Carbon Fire Studio; Business networking app City Hour; innovative online network for sports organizations Sport50; smart shopping with geolocated promotions Malinshopper; Energy management, monitoring and measurement system Positive Energy;  platform for event organizers looking to find sponsors SponsorMyEvent and itondo a fine art market place available via app.

The second session consisted of three start-ups: A social game by Judg; a mobile app for shoppers and retailers with offline marketing PushOrder and a virtual society platform by Cremong.

Winners of the competition were SponsorMyEvent  and FinTech start-up Crypto Facilities.

The winners got a Pirates on Shore t-shirt, but the big prize is the chance to participate in the finals in Cologne this September! Good luck.
