The LIST Organizes its First Hackathon

The LIST – Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology – is organizing its first (ever) hackathon on April 1. During the event, participants will get hands on experience with not only an innovative future technology – Tangible User Interfaces – but also LIST’s open source framework, TULIP, which can be used to easily develop applications on said interfaces.

LIST, where technology matters

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a mission-driven Research and Technology Organization (RTO) that develops advanced technologies and delivers innovative products and services to industry and society.

LIST accelerates time to market by maximizing synergies with different actors, including the university, the national funding agency and industrial clusters.

As a major driver of the diversification and growth of Luxembourg’s economy through innovation, LIST supports the deployment of a number of solutions to a wide range of sectors, including energy, IT, telecommunications, environment, agriculture, and advanced manufacturing, at both the national and European level. Thanks to its location in an exceptionally collaborative environment, namely the Belval Innovation Campus, LIST accelerates time to market by maximizing synergies with different actors, including the university, the national funding agency and industrial clusters.

A framework for developing tangible user interface applications

Part of the research conducted at the LIST probes the boundary of current technology. Researchers from LIST are thus inviting everyone to come learn about one of the innovations in the domain of Tangible User Interfaces that they are currently developing to help adopters of the tangible tabletop technology to develop applications.

We expect that the participants will gain some insights into our work and some appreciation for innovation and what it brings to the national landscape.

“The event aims to introduce experts as well as newcomers to the domain of Software Engineering for Tangible User Interfaces and the innovation around this concept currently produced at LIST,” says Event Officer Marylène Martin. “We expect that the participants will gain some insights into our work and some appreciation for innovation and what it brings to the national landscape. On a more technical level, we expect the participants to gain some technical insights into Tangible User Interfaces and TULIP, a framework to develop applications on said interfaces,” adds Martin.

Demystifying Tangible User Interfaces

“Tangible User Interfaces are a promising technology that allow users to use tagged objects, which can be of nearly any size, shape, and texture, to interact with a piece of software,” clarifies Martin. This tangible dimension allows the application and interface designers to leverage mankind’s innate ability to interact with physical objects and derive meaning, function, and purpose from their physical properties such as placement or orientation. “Scientists and engineers at LIST explore this phenomenon and use it to further research in the domain of collaborative problem solving where they try to apply this kind of interface in a collaborative setting to see if people understand complex problems more easily if they can use a richer interface environment,” she concludes.

Researchers and Engineers from LIST will present the technologies and provide participants access to TULIP.

While working on their research goals, the scientists and engineers have developed TULIP to help anyone rapidly develop applications. Not only does TULIP allow them to develop prototypes with less effort, it also offers the community an opportunity to work with JAVA to implement their applications on an abstract level rather than to have to deal with the hardware itself. “During the hackathon, people will have the opportunity to discover tangible user interfaces and TULIP. Researchers and Engineers from LIST will present the technologies and provide participants access to TULIP. They will then help them develop an application of their choice so they can get to know TULIP and see their application come to life on one of LIST’s tangible user interfaces,” concludes Martin.

A tempting teaser that could guide a crowd of innovators and budding entrepreneurs to Technoport, the business incubator, where the event will take place.
