With a strong positioning in the payment industry as a key player in account-to-account payment solutions, Payconiq keeps growing in Luxembourg through its mobile payment application. Together with Guido Vermeent, CEO of Payconiq International, we discuss more about the wide range of services the company offers to banks, payment solution providers and merchants, and its strategy to continue shaping the future of payments.

How widely used is Payconiq and in which geographic areas?

Today Payconiq has a strong footprint within the Benelux, providing services to partners in The Netherlands (iDEAL) and Belgium (Bancontact Payconiq) while running its operation in Luxembourg. As a payment service and technology provider, Payconiq offers a whole stack of services based on the latest API standards. While processing more than 3 million daily transactions, Payconiq supports Banks, Merchants and PSPs. In addition, Payconiq provides the entire end-to-end operation, from banks’ integrated apps to in-store payment terminals and value-added services.

What kinds of purchases are being made via Payconiq?

Payconiq solutions are used for casual buying or payments and in specific sectors like health and hospitals. The company provides a wide range of payment journey solutions and value-added services. Therefore, Payconiq sees a vast diversity in use made by the consumers: in-store on terminals for everyday payments like food, clothes, fuel, donations, online for delivery or click and collect, as well as peer-to-peer for sharing expenses at events, meals or reimbursements to family, friends or colleagues. Payconiq also provides services like invoice payments for energy, taxes, government administrations, or digital meal vouchers.

What are the average values of purchases made via Payconiq?

The average is around 80 euros. When Payconiq’s solution integrates with one of our bank partner’s apps, the payment range aligns to their policy.

“[…] the transactions made via Payconiq in the Benelux grew by more than 50% in 2021.”

What has been the evolution in recent years?

People and businesses are looking for smart, safe, and easy-to-use payment solutions with a flexible customer journey (frictionless, instantly executed payment). Payconiq received many requests to help payment platforms enrich their portfolio. Banks are also interested in growing their business through innovative solutions. Since 2020, a substantial increase in online digital and contactless payments has been seen, multiplied by 2 to 3 depending on the use case.

What is needed to reach the point where mobile payments overtake card payments?

While mobile devices are part of our daily life for many actions and activities, customers now expect to use their device in-store or online. Mobile solutions offer significant value in online and invoice payments (via QR code, on screen, or paper) and paying with mobile has already become standard in the supermarket and the catering industry. To go to the next level, companies such as Payconiq need to reach the point where digital payments become the usual way to pay, thanks to their reliability and ease of use.

What can you tell us about Payconiq’s near-term growth strategy?

Payconiq has grown fast, and the journey continues: the transactions made via Payconiq in the Benelux grew by more than 50% in 2021. Building on our experience and increasing the B2B activity, Payconiq is confident in the future and its strategy. In this highly connected market, Payconiq will keep developing innovative toolboxes supporting customers in various disciplines: payment apps, end-to-end processing, and value-added services (like loyalty programs and digital vouchers). Our ambition is to keep developing and shaping the future of payments through the whole of Benelux and beyond.
