Bird Pauses Luxembourg

After several days of suspense, Bird‘s General Manager of Europe met – finally! – Luxembourg-City’s Mayor Lydie Polfer. As announced last week, the authorities had the last word only one week after the company launched its self-service electric scooters service in Luxembourg. The company has 48 hours to leave the sidewalks. Arrr!

“We were delighted to have finally been able to meet with Mayor Polfer and her team after a number of requests over the past few months. The meeting was constructive and gave us the opportunity to explain how Bird can help solve Luxembourg’s congestion and air quality issues, as we’re doing in cities around the world. The Mayor told us her concerns which we are now working to address. We are temporarily pausing our service while we make these changes,” explained Bird spokesperson (see our article “Inside Bird’s Plan To Take Over Luxembourg-City“). “While we know this is disappointing for the thousands of people who have already used Bird. We believe it is best to work closely with the cities we operate in, so we will make these changes before resuming the service.”

Luxembourg, like all major cities suffers from congestion which leads to poor air quality. Bird’s mission was to help the city combat these issues by giving people an environmentally friendly and convenient alternative to the car.

Bird has been hugely popular in Luxembourg with thousands of people already having downloaded our app and taking a ride. In fact over 2,000 Luxembourgers downloaded the app and took a trip in the first few days of operation.

“While Bird believes it’s current operation in perfectly compliant with the current regulations we have decided to pause the service as a gesture of goodwill while we make some changes to the way we operate,” concluded the spokesperson.

End of the story? In which direction does Luxembourg-City want to go?
