Artificial Intelligence (AI) has entered our daily lives in many different areas. Lately, even art has been touched by AI in ways that might surprise. Given that we have only begun to grasp the potential of this technological revolution, some interesting questions regarding future evolutions arise and in order to help demystify AI and show you what AI actually can and what it cannot do, we talked to Prof. Dr. Leon van der Torre, Full Professor in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Luxembourg.
AI has definitely entered the art sector now. Be it to analyse and catalogue art or even to create. The latest Dall E, StarryAI, and Simplified projects give ordinary mortals the skills of illustrators, painters or drawers. In light of these new possibilities, Prof. van der Torre, how do you think these professions/arts will evolve?
I think that the evolution of these professions/arts will be largely driven by the increasing availability of tools that allow people to create high-quality artwork with little to no prior experience or training. As these tools become more accessible and easier to use, we will see a boom in the number of people creating artwork and illustrations, as well as a corresponding increase in the quality of the work being produced.
There is no doubt that arts will continue to evolve, as will the art professions. The biggest change that we will see in the next few years will be the increasing use of digital technology in the creation and dissemination of art. This will allow artists to reach a wider audience and create more complex and detailed works of art. We will also see the rise of new genres of art, such as virtual reality art, which will allow viewers to experience art in a completely new way. So no, if the question was whether AI is a threat to these professions/arts, I would rather see it as a huge opportunity for them to evolve. Because, if “ordinary mortals” are able to create art with the help of these new tools, just imagine what a “real artist” can do with them!
What approach, and what distance would you give future generations towards AI? How important is it for them to learn about artificial intelligence and its limits?
It is important to learn about artificial intelligence and its limits so that future generations can be informed about the potential risks and benefits of AI technology. One approach that could be taken is to provide future generations with a basic understanding of AI technology and its capabilities, at an early stage. This could help them make informed decisions about whether or not to use AI in their own lives. Another approach is to allow future generations to experiment with AI technology under supervised conditions. This could help them to understand its potential and learn about its limitations on their own. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to decide how much they want to learn about AI. However, future generations must be aware of the risks and benefits associated with this technology.
