Luxembourg’s public administration and research institutions are about to get the full AI treatment after the government signed a partnership with Parisian firm Mistral AI.
As part of the agreement, the French generative AI firm is to open Luxembourg offices, creating highly skilled jobs within the country.
Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden described the result as “European-style artificial intelligence with a Luxembourg touch,” adding: “Beyond the development of new AI tools, it is above all the adoption of new technologies by citizens, businesses and public administration that will make all the difference.”
Announced on the first day of the Nexus tech conference, the agreement aligns with Luxembourg’s recently unveiled AI strategy: to become a world leader in the sovereign data economy.
Specifically, the agreement aims to:
Accelerate the adoption of AI across public services and government.
Develop trusted and explainable AI with a focus on compliance.
Strengthen data sovereignty—all AI solutions will be hosted on-site to protect sensitive national data.
On the latter point, the statement said: “By opting for on-site solutions, we ensure that all critical information is protected in accordance with the most stringent security standards, while meeting our country’s specific requirements in terms of confidentiality and data protection. This approach strengthens not only data security, but also the confidence of citizens and businesses in the technologies deployed by the State.”
The statement did not clarify exactly how Luxembourg will leverage the strengths of generative AI power in its public sector. It did, however, outline the strengths of the technology for creating “public services that are more innovative, more efficient and better adapted to the needs of citizens and businesses.”
A separate agreement with Luxembourg’s defence ministry will see Mistral AI’s tools integrated into military operations. Meanwhile, the firm is set to collaborate with public research institutions on the theme of explainable AI for compliance, among others.
