The Luxembourg based non-profit organisation will participate in the new EU project using blockchain to manage decentralised IoT systems.

Infrachain, a Luxembourg based non-profit organisation with a European scope aiming to support the adoption of blockchain, will participate in the OASEES project.

The Open autonomous programmable cloud apps and smart sensors scheme will deliver a European, fully open-source, decentralised, and secure Swarm programmability framework for edge devices and leveraging various AI/ML accelerators (FPGAs, SNNs, Quantum) while supporting a privacy-preserving Object ID federation process. OASEES is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Program.

The initiative will tackle the massive increase in device connectivity and generated data, which have led to the proliferation of intelligent processing services to create insights and exploit data in a multi-modal manner.

“Currently, the most powerful data processing operates in a centralized manner at the cloud. However, centralised processing and cloud hosting usually rely on single large entities to provide authentication, data storage, data processing, connectivity, and orchestration,” Infrachain explains. “This significantly limits the user from its data governance and even identity management”.

OASEES addresses the shortfalls of traditional approaches via the use of blockchain and smart contracts.

“The project aims to create an open, decentralised, intelligent, programmable edge framework for swarm architectures and applications, leveraging the Decentralised Autonomous Organisation (DAO) paradigm and integrating Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) processes for efficient decision-making,” Infrachain continues.

Open tools, secure environments

“The vision is to provide open tools and secure environments for swarm programming and orchestration for numerous fields in a completely decentralised manner”.

The program will be used through six use cases: e-health (remote monitoring), energy (operation and management of swarms of e-vehicles), drone swarm for area and infrastructure inspection, structural safety for building and critical infrastructure, collaborative robotic automation and wind energy.

Officially kicked-off in a meeting in Athens on 24-25 January 2023, OASEES has been developed by a consortium of 21 members from nine EU countries, including Infrachain. The project duration is 36 months.

Infrachain has proposed scientific and operational topics related to blockchain, SSI and DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organisation) and is leading the design and definition of specifications for the Decentralized App (DApp) development for swarms.

The non-profit organisation will further contribute to OASEES’s DAO and smart contracts integration. It will be supported in the project by its members, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), and Compellio SA.

Launched in 2017, Infrachain is a cross-industry effort aiming to push the adoption curve of blockchain by sharing expertise, participating in blockchain projects, disseminating information on operational blockchain use cases, and creating an international ecosystem.

On 29 and 30 October, Infrachain organized its third Infrachain Challenge, focused on the Public Sector Blockchain developed by the Ministry for Digitalisation and on “Accelerating Public Energy Efficiency”.

The first prize was awarded to ZeroKnowledge for its project “Gamification for Reduced Energy Consumption”, a secure infrastructure for privacy, which preserves the use of energy consumption data.
