Ecosystem Video Series: Capturing The Startup Spirit

Max’s pick, Lisa’s story.

By definition, an ecosystem is the sum of diverse, interacting parts and interconnected systems. So, creating a video series that illustrates an ecosystem is much like trying to film each individual tree and the entire forest at the same time.

To begin, Digital Luxembourg called up reporter Lisa Burke. Together, the team quickly decided that the best way to grasp the ecosystem was to dive right in. And that is just what they did.

“We met so many people and went to so many different events that we really felt for ourselves what it was like to experience the startup ecosystem,” explained Lisa, Founder of MediaLabLuxembourg and creator of RTL Today. “My remit was to explain it on behalf of Digital Luxembourg – the unsung hero; the silent, invisible helping hand for so many people. I had to embody their voice, personality & spirit.”

“Entrepreneurship is not some exclusive club for the worthy few; it is an open invitation for anyone with an innovative idea and the guts to pursue it.”

As the project took shape, the team decided to create seven separate videos featuring six unique themes: (1) Why Luxembourg, (2) Community, (3) Incubators, Accelerators & Co-working – Part 1 & 2, (4) The House of Startups, (5) Where to Start, and (6) Advice from Entrepreneurs.

“In a video, you can only give a flavor of something, so all of our videos are visual appetizers. It’s like a collage of different ideas that come together to make it what it is.” she added. “The main goal of the series was to dig deep, decipher the startup ecosystem and guide people through it. Literally, where do you start, where do you go next?”

By bringing audiences up close to this buzzing world of innovation, full of everyday people who decided to go for it – the videos encourage those with even the slightest interest to consider all their possibilities. Entrepreneurship is not some exclusive club for the worthy few; it is an open invitation for anyone with an innovative idea and the guts to pursue it.

“My overriding memory is how friendly people are, and that they want you to succeed.”

“If it doesn’t work, that doesn’t matter. Luxembourg is a great place to try and you won’t fall too far here without someone helping you out,” Lisa said.

Every year, the framework of support within the ecosystem grows more robust, but its greatest strength is the community: the change makers and dream chasers who enthusiastically push the envelope of possibility. Through the pace of the edits and an entire video dedicated to community, viewers begin to feel its energy and spirit.

“My overriding memory is how friendly people are, and that they want you to succeed. I’ve always disliked the word ‘networking’ but here it doesn’t feel like that,” Lisa reflected. “It’s like a web of help out there to catch you when you’re having a bad day.”

Max Gutenkauf | Digital Communications Officer | Digital Luxembourg

“When I was asked to help with this project, I had just joined Digital Luxembourg. With a passion for entrepreneurship & technology, I was thrilled to explore the ecosystem. I quickly learned that, as with other startup hubs, Luxembourg has a lively ecosystem of its own, but it was sort of a hidden community. If you take a closer look, you find all of the co-working spaces, accelerators, events & support you could need. Once you enter, there’s nothing that can stop you. Our goal with this video series was to promote that ecosystem & provide valuable material that its members or potential members could use. We really tried to capture Luxembourg’s startup spirit & represent everyone!”
