On Wednesday 7 December, Luxembourg’s 11 5G projects selected by the department of media, connectivity and digital policy (SMC) got together one last time before most of them come to an end at the beginning of 2023.

Since the launch of Luxembourg’s dedicated 5G strategy in 2018, the department of media, connectivity and digital policy (SMC) has launched two calls for 5G projects, one in 2019 and one in 2021.

While the strategy aims for the allocation and general facilitation of 5G at a national level, Luxembourg’s 5G coverage is only expected to be complete by 2025. However, 5G is not only about faster download speeds, which is why the SMC has also been working on fostering innovative 5G solutions and actions with its call for projects.

While the first call for projects “aimed to trigger innovative projects in the field of new generation electronic communications”, the second call for projects aimed to was to “trigger creative 5G showcases based on 5G technologies alone or in conjunction with other communication standards and/or technologies”.

Whereas eight 5G projects were selected in the first call for projects, only 3 were selected in the second call for projects. Now that most of the initial eight projects have worked on their solution for more than two years, it was the moment to get together and recognize their valuable contributions.

“These projects help pave the way for an improvement in our quality of life while strengthening confidence in new technologies,” said Xavier Bettel, prime minister and minister for communications and media.

Following the presentation of each pilot project by the project leaders, the participants had the opportunity to exchange views and discover the projects in more detail at the 11 dedicated stands.

The 11 pilot projects presented at the event were:
