Luxembourg Business Angel Network: it's all about passion for entrepreneurship and investing in start-ups!

BAs play an important role in the economy, and in many countries constitute the largest source of external funding, after family and friends, in newly established ventures. The Luxembourg Business Angel Network (LBAN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting angel investing and supporting early stage investments in Luxembourg. BA and new president, Marc Molitor, explains the purpose of the organization and what an investor can find out more by joining the network.

What is the purpose of the Luxembourg Business Angel Network?

The main purpose of LBAN is to build a strong and active community of business angels and seed capital investors in Luxembourg. LBAN has reoriented its strategy to focus on serving the interests of the business angels and seed capital investors and interfacing with our partners who provide the matchmaking services between investors and projects.

We are defining ourselves as a “club” for experienced and less experienced investors. Our members share a common passion for entrepreneurship and investing in start-ups.

You just became “president” of the network on September 1, what is your program?

The first priority is to provide value for our members, so that they can do more and better investments. For that we need to provide a strong community, high level trainings as well as access to deal-flow and matchmaking opportunities.

The second objective for the coming year is to create awareness in Luxembourg of the business angels and seed capital investor’s community. We want to build and strengthen interfaces with other organizations in the Luxembourg ecosystem. Considering the size of the country it is of utmost importance that all organizations evolving in the Luxembourg entrepreneurial ecosystem are working together. We are notably working with the relevant stakeholders (notably the Ministries of the Economy and Finance) to create various incentive schemes to foster investments in early-stage projects.

What can an investor find out more by joining the network?

Doing investments together with other angels not only reduces the relative risk, but is also a lot more fun then going at it alone. An investor joining our community will have the opportunity to meet other investors for sharing best practices, discussing deal flows and exchanging ideas.

We are organizing once a month a convivial gathering – so-called Angel Café – where our members can share a drink. During our Angel Café we also have a guest speaker addressing a technical matter of interest (i.e. valuation, term sheet) for an investor or presenting a hot topic (i.e. new business models in niche sectors) or sharing best practices.

Our members benefit from exclusive and regular investment opportunities for national and international projects looking for seed investment or funds for an expansion.

We send out a monthly newsletter where we communicate interesting events being organized in Luxembourg or in the greater region (such as pitching event, conferences etc, ) as well as noteworthy projects.

Through our membership at EBAN (European Business Angel Network) we can provide our members with additional resources and shared knowledge.

How is the investment in business today in Luxembourg, from a business angel point of view?!

We have observed that there is a general and favourable trend in Europe and also in Luxembourg for the development of start-ups.

Notably, Luxembourg is becoming more and more attractive for start-ups through the several incubators and accelerator programs which have flourished all over the country.

There has been a real boost in innovation in Luxembourg, not only in the finance sector (e-payment and e-banking) but also in the health sector and ICT / e-commerce. We have also noticed that many entrepreneurs are coming from other countries to establish their business in Luxembourg.

We believe that there is a significant potential as regards the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Luxembourg which is very encouraging for the economy of the country.

As a result, Luxembourg is becoming an increasingly attractive platform for both investors and entrepreneurs.
