The EBSILUX project, an initiative aimed at integrating Luxembourg into the European Blockchain Service Infrastructure (EBSI), has partnered with SSI provider walt.id to develop an EBSI compliant wallet for diplomas.

Making use of blockchain to build cross-border services in Europe, EBSI is a pan-Europen project with a lot of potential. It was launched to make it easier for public administrations and their ecosystems to verify the information and increase the trustworthiness of their services.

Its European EBSI Diploma use case provides digitally verifiable educational credentials in Luxembourg for the purpose of transparency and trust between schools, universities, students, and employers.

“The issuing of a verifiable diploma has been the main challenge that LIST had to implement as a Minimum Viable Product. The LIST team had a real opportunity to demonstrate the potential of EBSI infrastructure for such use case,” says Dr. Djamelk Khadraoui, head of the trusted service system research unit of the LIST.

Digital Diplomas

The project will allow students to save their digital diplomas and access them through a digital wallet. This is made possible with the support of Vienna-based walt.id, who will make sure the wallet is EBSI compliant.

“It is a real pleasure to work with Luxembourg and the EBSILUX team. We are already looking forward to continuing our collaboration and pushing the adoption of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) in the public sector,” says Domini Beron, co-founder and CEO of walt.id.

Launched in 2020 by the Ministry for Digitalisation of Luxembourg, Infrachain, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), the EBSILUX project will result in improved access to trans-European services.

Citizens, businesses, and administrations from Luxembourg and the other EU Members States stand to benefit as they will get access to services based in Luxembourg and the other EU Member States.
