Picture report: Startup Weekend Luxembourg

Sunday, November 10th. Silicon Luxembourg attended the final presentations and awards ceremony of the 3rd Startup Weekend Luxembourg.

At 5 pm, on the 2nd floor of the Technoport, the business incubator, coworking space and fab lab, located in Esch-sur-Alzette behind an impressive blast furnace, 80+ people were seated when the first presentation started. Impatience, stress, enthusiasm, curiosity were combined. For 2 hours, 11 teams presented their projects on which they were working on during the last 50 hours.

White Wall, Chronosfair, MediaSafe Secure, My Designer Wardrobe, LingoNote, Curious Berry, A2B Fast, GeoDiscovery, Neighbour Cook, MyGolfPro and WakeMeApp. 11 great projects have been designed all weekend long. Each team had 5 minutes to convince the jury. Judges* were impressed and had also 3 minutes to ask questions and got further details. Projects were many and varied, from online art gallery to music platform, medical cloud, online cooking receipts, transport solution, fashion design, mobile apps for Q&A, alarm clock, golf, etc.

Audience was paying close attention to each presentation and warmly applaused each team. Friday and Saturday nights were really short in order to deliver the projects and be ready to face the judges. The Tweet Wall was on fire and people live shared pictures, first impressions and comments. More than 250 tweets have been posted under the hashtag #swlux during the ceremony.

At 7 pm, it was time for the candidates to have a rest and to put the world to rights. People were making bets and judges isolated themselves to deliberate…

Half an hour later, everyone came back in the open space to attend the last part of the ceremony and to listen to the results. 11 projects. 3 awards. First surprise, no 3rd place as the jury gave the same notes to two teams: LingoNote which app allows people, and children in particular, to learn a foreign language thanks to music and Curious Berry a Facebook’s app that allows people to ask questions and receive anonymous answers! Their entertaining presentations and live demos seduced the 5 members of the jury.

Then, after a 5 minutes speech of Praveen Paranjothi, the winner of the 2nd Startup Weekend Luxembourg was announced: MyGolfPro! The project went among the favorites. The app links golfers to teachers through videos in order to easily improve the gestures. Is it the start of a Luxembourgish success-story? Time will tell.

The ceremony finally closed its door with a friendly picture of all participants and a dinner to recover. Awarded teams shared together their bottles of Crémant and discussions stayed intense. Then it was time to go home
