Playtiles brings back the tactile joy of real buttons to mobile gaming. This simple, battery-free accessory turns any smartphone into a handheld console, offering curated indie games. We discussed it with Wesley and David from the tech team to learn more.
What sparked the idea for Playtiles?
It all started with a simple frustration: there are so many brilliant indie handheld-style games out there; but playing them on a touchscreen just doesn’t feel right. I missed the tactile joy of real buttons, but I didn’t want to carry around yet another bulky, battery-powered device or mess with Bluetooth pairing.
That’s where Playtiles began: physical buttons you simply place on your screen. No pairing, no battery… just play. We were originally exploring a micro-console, but it felt like adding more hardware to an already saturated space. We wanted something radically accessible, something we could almost give away.
There are already great retro-inspired handhelds on the market, but most are built to replay old classics. We wanted to create a device focused on new games, and offer a seamless experience: not just a controller, not just an emulator, but the full thing.
So we turned to the most powerful gaming platform people already have: their smartphone. Playtiles became a kind of symbiotic console combining a smartphone with a nicely made piece of polycarbonate to create something delightfully new.
How did you design it to feel like a real controller without electronics?
We focused on what matters most: reliable button feel and durable materials. The magic lies in capacitive conduction, when you press a button, it presses the touchscreen beneath. No batteries, no pairing, just mechanical ingenuity. To make it stick to the screen without glue or a strap, we use a special soft material filled with microscopic air bubbles. It clings to glass like thousands of tiny suction cups; strong, but easily removable and residue-free.
When we shared early prototypes, people’s first reaction was: “How has no one done this before?” and “You need to patent this!” So we did … utility patent, design model, and trademark.
How do you choose the indie games for Season 1?
We’re curating Season 1 like a mixtape, a blend of short, clever, and satisfying games from talented indie creators. We look for originality, charm, and that special something that makes a game shine in just a few minutes of play. After over a decade participating in game jams, we’ve built a strong network of amazing developers. But we’re also scouting the internet for hidden gems and creators who haven’t had their moment yet.
We’ve also launched an open call for submissions: game developers can now submit their games directly via our website, and if it fits the Playtiles philosophy, we’ll reach out with a publishing offer.
All selected games are properly licensed, and the developers are compensated. We want Playtiles to be a meaningful platform, one that celebrates and supports emerging talent.
What’s planned after Season 1?
Season 2. 😄
We’re already dreaming up more content: more games, new color variants, additional platforms and new use cases.
One exciting project is our upcoming Playtiles Dev Kit: a bundle with everything you need to make and play your own games. It includes a Playtiles controller, source files, and a fantastic beginner-friendly course created by a well-known developer and teacher from the community. It’s perfect for students, educators, and hobbyists. And if you’re building something cool with it, we’d love to see it, our submission form is open on the website, and we’re actively looking for fresh titles to publish; whether as part of an upcoming season or through custom limited runs, complete with your game’s key art on its own exclusive Playtiles.
You see, Playtiles is not just a new way to play new games, but a way to create and publish them too.
In fact, we see Playtiles more as an ecosystem than a console.
We’re also exploring B2B opportunities, from interactive business cards to gamified training tools. In fact, we’re already working with local partners on some playful pilot projects.

Where does Playtiles fit in today’s mobile gaming world?
Mobile gaming now makes up more than 60% of the global market but it’s saturated with ads, microtransactions, and endless clones chasing KPIs.
Playtiles carves out a quiet corner, a curated space for short, meaningful play. Tactile, distraction-free, and deeply personal. A place where solo creators can share their vision, and players can rediscover the physical joy of playing something new.
It’s not about grinding, monetisation, or retention loops. It’s about a few minutes of delight.
