The Internet of Things (IoT) has become part of our lives. The pervasive use of many IoT devices, such as smart cameras, smart thermostats, connected home hubs, remote door locks and various app-controlled appliances, is evidence that shows just how important this technology is in our society. Furthermore, the IoT is becoming essential not only for consumer use, but also equally for industries, allowing companies to automate processes and increase their operational efficiency.

However, the fast development of the IoT brings new challenges. On one hand, issues of interoperability, which is becoming crucial these days to connect IoT devices across various sectors. On the other hand, cybersecurity and privacy are major concerns, especially when IoT devices are connected to a public network or the Internet.

Thus, it is crucial to dispose of guidelines on how to communicate and exchange data between IoT systems, and provisions on security and data protection to help us manage and minimize such complexities.

In this context, different technical standardization committees such as ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41 Internet of Things and Digital Twin, ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27 Information security, cybersecurity, and privacy protection, and ETSI TC Cyber have published, and continue to develop, several standards related to this technology’s vocabulary, interoperability and information security. These standards are expected to help tackle the above-mentioned challenges.

The video below gives an overview of the standards documents contributing to interoperability and security and privacy for IoT devices. It also presents the different ways offered in Luxembourg to consult, purchase, or participate in the development of, certain technical standards, through ILNAS and ANEC GIE’s multiple products and services.
