On Friday December 3, His Royal Highness, The Hereditary Grand Duke visited the House of Startups. Launched by the Chamber of Commerce in 2018, this visit reflects the important ties between innovation, royal representation and state support in Luxembourg.

Receiving a royal visit is a rare privilege reserved for Luxembourg’s most important institutions. To honour the occasion, Carlo Thill, President of the House of Startups ensured the presence of Fernand Ernster, Vice-President of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce, Carlo Thelen, Director General of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce and Maurice Bauer, Alderman of Luxembourg City.

Welcoming His Royal Highness, The Hereditary Grand Duke was Philippe Linster, CEO of the House of Startups who was especially please to “bring together for this occasion the founding members of the House of Startups project, namely the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce and its various partners.”

Being on the receiving end of a second royal visit since the inauguration of the House of Startups three year ago was “a strong signal of the current and future commitment of the Court to support the development of innovation and entrepreneurship in Luxembourg,” says Philippe Linster.

Visiting Luxembourg’s Innovation Hubs

His Royal Highness, The Hereditary Grand Duke also visited the Luxembourg-City Incubator where he was presented its mission by its manager Bastien Berg and Maurice Bauer, Alderman of Luxembourg City.

The startups Salonkee and GAMMA AR both made a lasting impression. His Royal Highness also gladly signed the totem pole in the co-working spaces, leaving his signature next to His Royal Highness The Grand Duke and The Grand Duchess who left theirs a few years prior.

In the company of Pierre Gramegna, Minister of Finance and Nasir Zubairi, founder and CEO of the LHoFT, His Royal Highness, The Hereditary Grand Duke also visited the spaces of the flagship FinTech startups. Presentations by Satispay and Tokeny left His Royal Highness “very pleased that so many promising FinTechs have joined the LHoFT and capitalised on its developed network for their European expansion.”

Keeping with the momentum of innovation in Luxembourg is not easy in times where repeated restrictions put some startups in tough positions. However, royal visits and the continued support of Luxembourg’s most important ecosystem actors are no doubt a welcome sight.
