Open Data Challenges And Forensic Predictions

With massive free access to court decisions, legal professionals will have to equip themselves with new data processing technologies, estimates the young company Predictice.

The Parisian legatech Predictice, which specializes in predictive justice, is organizing a webinar on 25 November on innovations in Luxembourg’s legal world.

During the event, a round table will be devoted to the open data of court decisions in Luxembourg. The open data of court decisions enables the massive availability of judgments and cases in administrative, criminal and civil matters.

The Grand Duchy has already set up a data portal, which includes the judgments of the District Court of Luxembourg (from 2002 to 2018), the Court of Cassation (1983 – 2018), cases at the Court of Appeal (2013 – 2018), minors in moral and physical danger (1988 – 2016) and penitentiary establishments in Luxembourg (1935 – 2017).

Challenges of open data

However, the majority of data available to the general public requires the implementation of new and more powerful tools that can store, manage and analyze this information quickly.

With this webinar, Louis Larret-Chahine, co-founder and Managing Director of Predictice, wishes to draw up an inventory of the state of open data for court decisions in Luxembourg.

The panel discussion will bring together Viviane Reding (former European Commissioner for Justice and Vice-President of the European Commission), Lotty Prussen (Vice-President of the Superior Court of Justice of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg), John Dann (Director of the Central Legislation Service, Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg), and Jeannot Nies (Deputy State Prosecutor, Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg).

It will be moderated by Elise Maillot, Director of Public Relations and Marketing at Predictice.

In a second part, representatives from the Luxembourg law firms Bonn Steichen & Partners, Arendt & Medernach, and the Foyer Assurances group will present their respective innovation strategies in the field of open data.

Louis Larret-Chahine will close the webinar by presenting the Predictice application, dedicated to the research and analysis of legal information. The platform contains all legislative texts and court decisions available in France, Luxembourg and Europe.

A tool for predicting litigation

The database also offers a search engine and statistical analysis of jurisprudence, as well as access to news and personalized legal data that can then be stored and hosted on the legatech platform.

Legatech recently launched Scan, a new feature that allows its clients to manage their own legal content and information electronically, while offering direct access to decisions, legal grounds and legal texts mentioned in their own legal documents (sets of conclusions, memos, etc.).

Founded in 2016 in Paris, Predictice employs around 30 people and has around 2,000 clients in France.

The young company is waiting for the lifting of the confinement in France to set up an office and develop its activities in Luxembourg, before expanding into other European markets.

In the Grand Duchy, it already serves law firms and insurance companies.

Predictive justice is about predicting the potential outcome of future litigation and lawsuits, based on the history of litigation judged. To do so, it analyzes large amounts of justice data available online. Its predictions are based on algorithms and the calculations of probabilities.
