The year 2023 saw the establishment of the first Incubator in Luxembourg, dedicated to the needs of health technology start-ups and spin-offs.

The Bioincubator provides over 300 m2 of equipped, shared laboratory space, kitted out with a comprehensive set of laboratory equipment, offering young companies the opportunity to launch their experimental activities without the need of major upfront investment. Digital HealthTech companies also have their place at the Bioincubator, in shared offices co-located in the House of BioHealth in Esch-sur-Alzette.

This unique facility offers flexible wet lab and office space, as well as essential business development and support services to early-stage companies. Among the companies hosted at the Bioincubator are two spin-offs of the University’s Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB): OrganoTherapeutics, which uses human-specific organoids for drug discovery in Parkinson’s disease, and NIUM, a platform that provides personalised metabolism-based dietary recommendations. The Bioincubator is equally open to start-ups interested to freshly incorporate in Luxembourg, such as Polydiagnostics, graduate of the Fit4Start Healthtech acceleration programme.

“This initiative is a testament to Luxembourg’s commitment to fostering a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem in the HealthTech sector.”

The Bioincubator and the House of BioHealth are part of the larger HE:AL campus project. Strategically located near the future Südspidol hospital, the University of Luxembourg and other national research institutions, it provides an ideal environment for HealthTech companies.

Supported by a MECO-FNR KITS grant, the Bioincubator operations are currently run as a consortium between the LCSB of the University of Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) and Technoport, the leading technology incubator in Luxembourg. The Executive Committee includes Dr Clemens Ostrowicz (LCSB), Dr Jéremie Langlet (LIH) and Diego De Biasio (Technoport). The Bioincubator manager role is held by Dr Silvia Colucci (LCSB) who explains: “This initiative is a testament to Luxembourg’s commitment to fostering a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem in the HealthTech sector.” Facility management and contracting for wet lab or office rentals are handled directly by the House of BioHealth.
