The University of Luxembourg’s research into software verification and validation is in the spotlight after ACM SIGSOFT granted its Outstanding Research Award to the team’s head.

As a recipient of the prize Professor Lionel Briand, who leads the software verification and validation research group at the university’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), will give the keynote speech at the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE). This flagship conference on software engineering is held in Pittsburgh, USA, from 22-28 May. During the conference, he will receive his award from the ACM SIGSOFT chair.

According to the university, the prestigious award recognises Prof. Briand’s high-impact research on software testing and quality assurance “including security and artificial intelligence aspects, through his many years of research collaborations with industry.”

“I feel both honoured and humbled by this award. Past recipients include pioneers and founders of my research field, software engineering, researchers who have had a huge impact on both science and the software industry,” Prof. Briand said in an official statement, adding: “As the saying goes, as scientists, we ‘stand on the shoulders of giants’ and in my field, many of them have received this award. Furthermore, I am very grateful to the many students and collaborators I have had the chance to work with over the years. In research, teamwork is essential.”

A member of the SnT faculty since 2012, Prof. Briand was awarded the ACM Most Influential Paper Award in 2015 and 2021 and he is one of just two researchers in the world to receive the award more than once. In 2010, he was awarded the rank of Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), in 2012, he received the IEEE TCSE Harlan Mills award, and in 2020 he was awarded the rank of Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Prof. Briand also holds a Canada research chair in intelligent software dependability and compliance at the University of Ottawa.
