Global provider of space-based data, analytics, and services Spire has been awarded a multi-million euro contract by EUMETSAT, Europe’s meteorological satellite agency.

Although space companies are diversifying their services more than ever, weather forecasting remains an important staple for many, especially when it comes to adapting to the effects of climate change.

After demonstrating the accuracy and quality of their radio occultation (RO) data in a pilot program, Spire was rewarded with a two-year contract from 2024-2026 by EUMETSAT, with three optional one-year extensions.

“As extreme weather events become more frequent, our work with EUMETSAT shows a shared commitment to using space-based data to confront the impacts of climate change.”

The company’s RO data provides Europe’s satellite agency with critical, near-real-time data on pressure, humidity and temperature across the entire globe, including remote regions and open oceans.

The data will be distributed to the EUMETSAT community globally to support them in their weather forecasting.

“It was important to EUMETSAT that the terms of this contract allow us to redistribute the data globally, in line with the World Meteorological Organization’s principle of free and open data exchange,” said EUMETSAT Director-General Phil Evans.
