[Talk] The State of Cybersecurity

Following the publication of the new issue of Silicon Luxembourg’s magazine, startup founders, industry players, and stakeholders gathered together to discuss the state of cybersecurity.

Taking place at Silversquare Liberté, “The State of Cybersecurity” afterwork talk welcomed five speakers to discuss two key cybersecurity topics.

On the one hand, Christophe Bianco, co-founder and managing partner of Excellium Services, and Dr Jean Lancrenon, project officer at ILNAS’ Digital Trust department discussed how resources and knowledge shaped startups’ and SMEs’ readiness to deal with cybersecurity issues.

While lack of resources are often touted as one of the main hurdles regarding cybersecurity implementation, both experts agreed that many companies already fail to implement the simplest and cheapest solutions.

“Cybersecurity does not need to be rocket science,” said Christophe Bianco, adding that a strong password manager and awareness sessions with employees would go a long way to improving companies’ cybersecurity readiness.

Be better protected than your neighbour

In the second panel discussion, Remy Bertot, founder and CTO of Passbolt, François Thill, director of cybersecurity at the ministry of economy and representative of Women Cyber Force and Dr Andreas Crauser, senior consultant on data and information security at DURY Consult discussed best practices for startups and the impact AI would have on the industry.

Although AI is on everyone’s lips, it doesn’t appear to have gripped the cybersecurity industry as much as others. Key for the industry remains adopting a security by design approach and understanding the underlying technology.

As for startups, they don’t have to be protected to be the best protected, they only need to be better than their competitors, or in the words of Remy Bertot:

“If you’re being chased by a bear, you don’t have to be faster than him, just your neighbour.”
