Jacques Sitz, the mayor of the City of Remich, tells us more about their second Startup Edition and Remich’s ambitions to become a startup hub in the future.

This will be the second startup event organised by the City of Remich. What is the motivation behind it? Is Remich trying to position itself more as a tech city?

The City of Remich is evolving. In September 2021, the master plan “Remich 2035” was presented to the public which also includes the redevelopment of the carpark “Um Gréin” into co-working and living spaces. Furthermore, many available spaces in the old parts of the city would be perfect to accommodate startups and create links between local businesses.

The goal of the second startup event is to continue building a platform for startups and show the potential and attractiveness of our city with its “perfect” location. Remich is ideally situated on the European Road on the border triangle between Luxembourg, France, and Germany, which offers, with its close routes, a perfect location for companies to settle down. Surrounded by vineyards, forests, and the Moselle River, Remich offers a perfect environment for a work-life balance and attracts a lot of different people which enables symbioses between all target groups.

What have you learnt from the first edition and what changes have you made to the programme?

The second edition of the startup event is in cooperation with GAL Leader Miselerland which also focuses on the creation and promotion of spaces for startups and co-working spaces. Furthermore, this year’s startups are more approachable to ordinary people. Most are looking both for investors as well as for regular clients which enables a larger target group for the event. In 2021 all startups came from Germany whereas this year two Luxembourgish startups are participating in the event (Wasch & nZero).

For this event you’re partnering with CorpPearls, a German consultancy boutique. Why did you decide to partner with them and not a Luxembourgish startup network?

The connection with Tobias Verlende of CorpPearls was made through the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works a couple of years ago and since last year’s event was a success the commune decided to continue to work with them. CorpPearls has connections to several interesting startups and investors in different countries and is specialized in matchmaking startups with investors.

Why should our readers join this event?

There is a broad diversity among the startups with very different business models and their products speak to several target groups.

Are there any upcoming events our readers should be aware of?

I would recommend our synthetic ice-skating rink from November 25th – January 8th which is a novelty in Luxembourg. Instead of cancelling our traditional mobile ice-skating rink altogether this year, the college of aldermen decided to lease a synthetic ice-skating rink to reduce energy costs. Furthermore, you could mention the artisans Christmas market on November 26th & 27th with local artisans and producers.

Register now for the 2nd Startup Event in Remich on 2022, October 26th.
