Bulk-shopping e-commerce Kilogram has opened its first physical store. Shoppers in Capellen can get their hands on local and organic goods with no packaging.

The online shop venture was started by Stéphanie Lamberty in 2022. A year later, and with the support of the Oeuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, it has taken a step forward in its zero-waste mission.

Kilogram’s customers can place their order online and pick it up at the store or have it delivered at home. The likes of rice, flour, or cereal are sent in a jar, which the customer then returns when they get their next order or in person. The store is open between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon because, the rest of the time, Lamberty and her employees are engaged in preparing online orders or meeting with local producers.

“We wanted a cosy space entirely conceived and furnished with reclaimed objects and materials for a store as circular as our jars.”

Lamberty plans on starting workshops for its clients, according to Infogreen. Also, fruit and vegetables will be on the menu in the future. Securing partners locally is significantly harder than doing it the traditional way. In 2022, packaging-free grocery store Ouni went bankrupt. The pandemic certainly had a role to play in that, but there is also the question of whether customers are prepared to put their wallets where their mouth is.
